Pyruvic acid is an alpha-keto acid. It is found in honey, vinegar, apples and fermented fruits and has epidermal and dermal effects. At the epidermal level, it has keratolytic and antibacterial properties and is very effective in the treatment of acne. It reduces the cohesion of keratinocytes in the epidermis and prevents the thickening of the upper layers of the epidermis. In the dermis, it promotes the production of collagen and the formation of elastic fibers and glycoproteins. It reduces wrinkles, photoaging and pigmentation. It creates a regeneration process in the dermis and improves skin texture and sagging skin.
Due to its low pKa value and small molecule size, pyruvic acid penetrates quickly and deeply into the skin and has an intensive effect.
Lactic acid promotes good hydration by strengthening the skin barrier and preventing water loss. By forming a protective film, it helps exfoliate the skin without drying it out. Lactic acid increases the production of collagen, elastin, glycosaminoglycans and hyaluronic acid.
